The results reported here are for the best products introduced during the fourth quarter of 2005. Diverse products made the cut. In the analog category, Linear Technology's LTC3035 very low-dropout linear regulator topped the list. The 300-milliamp regulator offers a low internal reference voltage with corresponding, adjustable output-voltage operation from 0.4 to 3.6 volts. Sharp Microelectronics' LQ035Q7DH-06 thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display took the top slot among components. The TFT-LCD, with integrated touch screen for next-generation handhelds, serves up high brightness, low power consumption and high color saturation. Claiming the power-products lead was Maxwell Technologies' BMOD2600-48 Ultracapacitor module. The fully integrated, 48-volt multicell unit comprises 18 MC2600 cells. The 2.7-V cells have a power density of 10.4 kilowatts/kilogram. Texas Instruments' MSP430F20xx microcontroller ran away with the votes in the processors and memories category. Targeting battery-powered applications, the MSP430 series MCU delivers 500 nanoamps in standby mode using very low-power oscillator (VLO) technology. Oscilloscopes from Tektronix and LeCroy were recognized in the test-and-measurement category. Tektronix's DPO-7000 digital phosphor oscilloscope line of midrange scopes took the No. 1 spot, with LeCroy's Windows-based Waverunner Xi digital scope running a close second. Cutting component count 75 percent, Silicon Laboratories' monolithic radio for GSM/GPRS captured the interest of our respondents in RF and microwave. In logic, Texas Instruments' 3.3-V and 5-V full-duplex RS-485 transceivers captured the top position with ESD protection of more than15 kilovolts. Here's how Ultimate Products works: Our editors select up to 10 of the most significant products posted at eeProductCenter.com in the calendar quarter. Then we submit the products and accompanying editorial reviews to selected, qualified readers, who vote by electronic ballot. More than 1,000 readers scored the products' technical significance and usability on a scale of 1 through 5, with 5 the top score. In each category, the No. 1 product was judged most technically significant. Relative usability rankings and selected reader comments are also reported. More than 1,000 of you helped to choose these products, and as always, we are grateful for your enthusiastic participation. Marty Gold TABLE OF CONTENTS THE RANKINGS Readers ranked products for technical significance and usability on a scale of 1 through 5 (with 5 as the highest score). However, the product rankings reported in this issue are relative to other products within the category-not absolute scores. The product ranked 1 in each category was judged as most technically significant for that category. Relative usability rankings and selected reader comments are also reported. | |||
