INFINEON TECHNOLOGIES
High-voltage MOSFETs smash RDS record
eeProductCenter's Vince Biancomano says: "Touting a technical breakthrough that allows the MOSFETs to overcome the so-called silicon limit for performance (a fivefold increase in on-resistance for a doubling of blocking voltage), Infineon says the 600-volt CoolMOS CS Server MOSFETs have an RDS of just 99 milliohms in a standard TO-220 package, and 45 milliohms in a standard TO-247 package, coupled with the industry's fastest switching speed of 150 V/ns. "
Readers say: » "This product will be a boon to power supply and amplifier designers alike." » "This is a real breakthrough!" » "COOL!" » "Is this an April Fools joke? They are eating IR's lunch if it isn't." » "Opens the door for new power applications."

VALERE POWER
Backup system powers remote sites via landline
eeProductCenter's Vince Biancomano says: "This Line Power Solutions family extends battery backup from a centralized source to a remote location via unused telephone lines to support "triple-play" voice, video, and data service offerings and wireless access points. "
Readers say: » "I think it is a great idea."
USABILITY RANK: 6

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS
TI fuses end-to-end digital-power solution
eeProductCenter's Vince Biancomano says: "This complementary, flexible set of parts serves well to familiarize OEM designers with the advantages of digital-power design, which include intelligent, adaptive power management, precise control of power supply parameters, and an overall reduction in total parts countý-from 40%to 75% for two example cases cited by the company. "
Readers say: » "If this product lives up to its claims, this could drastically change the way I implement my power designs." » "Seems like a step in the right direction for TI"
USABILITY RANK: 2

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS
Battery-pack validation IC beefs up security
eeProductCenter's Vince Biancomano says: "Touting a step increase in battery-pack safety and validation security, the bq26150 employs an advanced authentication technology to identify batteries that meet/fail to meet the approval of OEM manufacturers for their cell phone, PDA, digital still camera, and notebook PC products. Unlike previous security systems, this one is based on a dynamic encryption scheme between the battery pack and host processor that uses a shared client/host key to virtually eliminate battery "forging." "
Readers say: » "This is a step in the right direction for security and safety. Can it withstand a good drop?" » "Great product. I can't wait for the other security devices planned. There may be a way to make the first graphic more obvious."
USABILITY RANK: 7

(5)
ENPIRION
System-on-chip calls attention to higher power density
eeProductCenter's Vince Biancomano says: "Enpirion has once again packed more electrical power into a smaller space than anyone else in the world. The company's new EN5360, the second device in its point-of-load (POL) product line, represents a 100% increase in output power over previous versions, with only a 21% increase in board space required."
Readers say: » "700w/sq" is significant!"
USABILITY RANK: 3

(6)
INTERNATIONAL RECTIFIER
Power-factor IC initiates the "high-density" cycle
eeProductCenter's Vince Biancomano says: "The IR1150 family of µPFC devices cuts real-estate requirements in half for power-factor-correction (PFC) chips in 75-watt to 4-kW applications. "
Readers say: » "Anything that saves energy is a good thing."
USABILITY RANK: 5

ROYAL PHILIPS ELECTRONICS
Powertrain doubles DC/DC's power density
eeProductCenter's Vince Biancomano says: "The PIP212 brings system DC/DC converter efficiencies as high as 94%(dual-phase 30 amp design, 12 volts input, 3.3 volts output). As a consequence of placing the driver and two trench MOSFETs in the same package (as with its first-generation part, the PIP201-12M), Philips greatly minimizes the device's parasitic inductances. The company says it has brought the driver's di/dt response up to 6 A/µs."
Readers say: » "It's about time someone started doing something about integrating power devices. Why must we have to add real estate to our PC boards, the cost of additional parts placement, and individual device tolerance fluctuations to our designs when someone like Philips can make our lives so easy. Thank you Philips, hear that IR?"
USABILITY RANK: 4

ARTESYN TECHNOLOGIES
Eighth-bricks reach 300 watts
eeProductCenter's Vince Biancomano says: "These open-frame, single-board DC/DC converters, one of which delivers an unregulated output, and two that provide semi-regulation, are designed to generate a 12-volt intermediate bus voltage for powering multiple downstream (non-isolated) POL converters in distributed power systems. "
Readers say: » "You get more for less. That is always good."
USABILITY RANK: 8

(9)
POWERDSINE
PoE midspan delivers condensed 48-port solution, PowerDsineýs PD-6548
eeProductCenter's Vince Biancomano says: "PowerDsine says its PD-6548 is the industry's first 48-port power-over-Ethernet (PoE) midspan which, in a 19-inch, rack-mountable 1U enclosure, also delivers twice the port-density provided by two 24-port midspans for powering Voice over IP (VoIP) systems. "
Readers say: » "I have seen the technology for this for over a year. Great to see it going to market. Are there products for the other end yet?" » "Raising the bar." » "The enable/disable feature per port is a plus!"
USABILITY RANK: 10

(10)
C&D TECHNOLOGIES
Quarter-brick touts digital edge, C&D Technologiesý QBC12/22-L48
eeProductCenter's Vince Biancomano says: "The QBC12/22-L48, a quarter-brick bus converter in Datel's single-output QBC family, is optimized for a total on-board solution when used with the company's (non-isolated) point-of-load (POL) converters in the HEN, LEN, LQN, LSM, and LSN series."
Readers say: » "Latch-up protection is a good selling point."
USABILITY RANK: 9
