Lithium-ion cell claims best-in-class performance

Austin, Texas—A new phosphate-based lithium-ion power cell from Valence Technology touts superior cycling and rate capability to existing types, with the company also promoting it as the only safe large-format lithium-ion rechargeable. Using the company's Saphion technology, the IFR18650p, a 3.2-volt, 1100 mA-h source, thus is designed to offer even greater benefits over nickel metal hydride (NiMH) and nickel cadmium (NiCd) power sources, particularly for consumer appliance applications.

"The Saphion power cell offers the extended cycling and power delivery that is needed for many motive and portable consumer appliance applications," said Stephan Godevais, chairman and CEO. "We are the only company that can offer all the benefits of lithium-ion and the required safety characteristics."

Saphion technology's cathode material is designed to replace heavy metals with phosphates to create batteries that are chemically more stable and safer than traditional oxide-based batteries. Key features of the Saphion power cell include ability to charge to 95 percent of capacity in 30 minutes, cycling capability up to 1,000 cycles, low internal resistance (20 milliohms, at 1 kHz), and no memory effects. The new cells, measuring 65 mm high and with a diameter of 18 mm and weighing 39 g, are priced at under $5 each.
