Carlsbad, Calif.—Emerson Network Power has expanded its series of Astec DS front-end power supplies for high-density distributed bulk power with a 650-watt unit, its DS650-3. The supply, delivering up to 52 amps at 12 VDC and 3.3 VDC (standby output) at up to 6 amps from a universal AC input, incorporates full RoHS compliance and meets industry requirements for units free of tantalum capacitors. Its 1U-by-2U form factor (1.57-by-3.20-by-11 inches) enables flexible configuration to maximize the use of rack space. An 850-watt model in the same enclosure and pin-outs is slated for release later in the year.

The high-density (12W/in3) DS650-3 design and high-availability features make it suitable for servers as well as datacom, data storage, medical and industrial applications. Featuring full current-sharing capabilities and internal MOSFET OR-ing for isolation, it supports hot-swap and redundant applications requiring maximum reliability. Up to five supplies can be installed in a 1U rack, and up to 10 in a 2U rack.

The front-end features active power factor correction (typically greater than 0.98), active inrush-current-limiting circuitry, and over-voltage and over-current protection. The internally fan-cooled unit has no minimum load requirements and include over-temperature protection, remote-inhibit and remote-sensing on the main output. An I2C communications interface bus provides voltage and current monitoring, remote on/off, and internal fan speed control. A bi-color LED provides visual status of AC OK, DC Power Good, and Fan Fail conditions.

The unit complies with worldwide safety and performance standards and bears UL60950, NEMKO, CB Report, China CCC and CE Marks. Designed to NEBS Bellcore standards for electromagnetic susceptibility, it also complies with the latest lead-free requirements. In addition, the new model is rated over -10 to +50°C without derating and conforms to industry MIL standards for shock and vibration. The unit also comes standard with a mechanical latch, handle and EMI clips.

The DS650-3 model is priced starting at $231 each in OEM quantities.
