The manufacturer says eePC's Gina Roos says
Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.), Inc. announces the world's first 2.2 μF Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor (MLCC) in EIA 0402 case size. The new device offers more than twice the capacitance when compared to the previous maximum rating of 1μF for 0402 (1.0 x 0.5 x 0.5 mm) components. With this development, larger 0603 (1.6 x 0.8 x 0.8mm) 2.2 μF devices are no longer necessary, resulting in a more than 50% board space saving for equivalent capacitor performance in effectively reducing noise in power line decoupling circuits.

A major step forward in meeting the industry's continuing miniaturization trend in cellular phones, digital cameras, PDAs and other ultra-portable electronic devices, Taiyo Yuden's industry-leading material science expertise and high-precision multi-layering techniques were key to the success of these efforts. Continual refinements to the company's material-handling technology and fabrication processes, coupled with optimizing the crystalline structure of the processed powder, resulted in a significantly higher level of crystallization and uniformity of particulate size. In this way, Taiyo Yuden scientists were able to maintain the ceramic capacitor's constant electrical properties while reducing the actual diameter of the dielectric particles to just 0.2 microns. This in turn enabled a corresponding reduction in dielectric layer thickness to one micron or less—opening the way for stable mass production of a new generation of super-thin, ultra-compact, high-value capacitors.

In July Taiyo Yuden started full-scale mass production of the 0402 size 2.2 μF MLCC, along with a 0603 size 10μF component, the most widely used MLCC in the industry. Available with X5R temperature characteristics, initial monthly production volumes of five million units each are projected to reach 20 million units each per month by March 2005.

Sample price is $0.10 for the AMK105BJ225MV (0402, 2.2 μF) and $0.20 for the AMK107BJ106MA (0603, 10 μF). Availability is now with volume production quantities. Delivery is two weeks.

Schaumburg, Ill. — Thanks to manufacturing process improvements, Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.), Inc. says it has released the industry's first 2.2 microfarad (μF) multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) in a standard 0402 case size. This doubles the capacitance of 1 μF previously available in a 0402. Designed for cell phones, digital cameras and personal data assistants, these new devices can replace larger 2.2 μF 0603 devices in these applications for a 50% board space savings.

The company said continual refinements to the company's material-handling technology and fabrication processes, coupled with optimizing the crystalline structure of the processed powder, resulted in a significantly higher level of crystallization and uniformity of particulate size. This means the company was able to increase the capacitance relative to case size by decreasing the size of the ceramic powder particles, which in turn translates into thinner ceramic dielectric layers of about one micron. Therefore, a higher number of dielectric layers can be stacked in one MLCC package without making it any larger. The more layers you pack in; the higher the capacitance value.

The new 0402 MLCC offers a capacitance value of 2.2 μF at 4 volts with a ±20% or ±15% tolerance. The operating temperature range is -55°C to 85°C.

The company has already started to roll out additional products using the improved manufacturing processes. Also available is an 0603 MLCC with a capacitance value of 10 μF, up from 4.7 μF, at 4 volts with a ±20% and ±15% tolerance. The operating temperature is the -55°C to 85°C. Next up is an 0805 MLCC with a capacitance value of 47 μF. In the near future, the company also expects to offer higher voltage ratings of 6.3 V and 10 V.

Available with X5R temperature characteristics, initial monthly production volumes are planned for five million units each with projections to reach 20 million units each per month by March 2005. Sample price for the AMK105BJ225MV (0402, 2.2 μF) is $0.10 and $0.20 for the AMK107BJ106MA (0603, 10 μF) device. Delivery is two weeks.
